Sarah Brightman -- Scarborough Fair
Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Remember me to one who lives there He once was a true love of mine
Tell him to make me a cambric shirt Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Without no seams nor needle work Then he'll be a true love of mine
Have him wash it in yonder dry well Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Where ne'er a drop of water e'er fell And then he'll be a true love of mine
Tell him to find me an acre of land Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Between salt water and the sea strands Then he'll be a true love of mine
Tell him to reap it with a sickle of leather Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme And gather it all in a bunch of heather Then he'll be a true love of mine
Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Remember me to one who lives there He once was a true love of mine
Music and lyrics: traditional, adapted by Peterson From: La Luna (2000) and from: La Luna: non-European version (2000) Source of the lyrics: the CD-booklet, with "she" and "her" converted to "he" and "his", because Sarah sings the songs as a woman, and one or two other small corrections. The lines in italics are in the booklet, they but are sung, and the repetition of the first stanza at the end is not in the booklet. (Thanks also to Colin Mak.) There is a very nice page with background info on this song, Scarborough, etc. The lyrics given on that page differ somewhat from the above, and there are in total 10 stanzas. [Thanks to Christian Wallenborg for info on this.] Piron Christian (PironC@SparkasseBaden.at) wrote me that the arrangement of "Scarborough Fair" is the same as on "GREGORIAN - Masters of Chant", where Sarah is also singing the last song. Sarah sang this song on 12 May 2000 in a Mother's Day programme on German TV ("Mama Mia", ARD) and it sounded very good! Jörg Kubitza took some 30 screen grabs of the song and you can look at them via Elden's picture page 24. The presenter of the programme seemed to say that this song will be Sarah's new single, but I have no confirmation of that.
