Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Trevor Nunn, after T.A. Elliot. Italian lyrics: Roberto Ferri. Show: "Cats" (1981/1992). Best known as "Memory" in "Cats" and premiered for a lower and very different voice than Sarah's in that show, it was originally composed for an idea I had to write a short opera about the rivalry of the composers Leoncavallo and Puccini on the subject of La Boheme. Leoncavallo's version opened to good reviews. Puccini's did not and was an instant hit. There is not space to go into here what the role of this melody would have been if I had ever finished the piece, but suffice it to say that those whos observe that "Memory" is Pucciniesque are dead right. It was meant to be. The Italian translation gave us a chance to record the song in the way it might have been scored if the original idea had been completed. [from the CD-booklet] From: Surrender, The unexpected songs (1995). Source of the lyrics: Melissa Hofmann (hofmannm@tcnj.edu), who also sent me a literal translation in English made by Dr. Paola Blelloch, Professor in the Modern Languages Department at The College of New Jersey:
Slowly (Memory) Slowly these love steps On the way to your heart Which leads me to you The wind of time is blowing This night which is going Will always find us here
Slowly without noise The world turns the hours It is in such a hurry Tomorrow this night Will be a memory And will always come back here
The sun rises Which will find Us embraced Its hand on the door Slowly opens the sky To the morning
A day while winter arrives A loyal return Its snow will fall And a dearer night Will be this evening When it will get dark
The sun rises Which will find Us embraced Its hand on the door Slowly opens the sky To the morning
Loud I want to shout it This love louder This night will be How many times In bed he woke up with me This love is for you
This English translation is at some points quite different from the original English lyrics from Cats, which is not a surprise since the translators had to adapt the lyrics a bit so that the Italian words would fit in the rhythm and make the song sound good in Italian. The CD The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection contains a Merory-version from 1992.
